We are the Society of Professional Journalists at the Ohio State University! Committed to fair and ethical journalism, our group is about learning and sharing experiences as we prepare to go into the "real world" of news. Please stop by a meeting and join (it's free)!
We had great turnout at our sports meeting on Thursday, and we grateful to Grace Levitt, Lori Schmidt and Jeff Svoboda for making time to come talk with us. They had a lot of great insights and some pretty funny stories too.
We’ve had great luck so far with all our meetings, and all you who have been coming are to thank. We hoping you are enjoying them as much as we are.
Our next one will be on Oct. 30 and will be all about politics. Oh and cookies too.
Mike Thompson of WOSU Public Media will be there. Andy Chow from Ohio Public Radio too.
If you haven’t heard, our meeting this Thursday is all about sports.
We’ll have a panel discussion with Grace Levitt (Bleacher Report), Lori Schmidt (97.1 WBNS), Kaily Cunningham (News Herald), and Jeff Svoboda (Buckeye Sports Bulletin).
We’re in the middle of football season and winter sports are right around the corner. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in sports journalism. Get ahead in a competitive field by getting insight from the pros.
And a quick thank you to everyone that made it to our “Pizza and Ethics” meeting on the 2nd. It was a pleasure to hear from Kevin Z. Smith, who chaired SPJ’s ethics committee for over 20 years. As technology changes the practices of journalism, it was great to get a reminder of the one thing that should never change in the field: integrity.
The meetings have all been great so far, so I hope you’ll all come and check us out this Thursday, Oct. 16th. 6 pm in the Journalism Building’s Room 106.
Thanks to everyone who came out to our meeting last week. We think it was a heck of a success and hopefully you were able to get a lot of insight from Holly Zachariah, Garth Bishop, and Thomas Bradley.
We are having a fundraiser this Saturday at J. Gumbo’s. Come in any time, grab some food, drop your receipt into the jar at the end of the line and help us to make this the best club it can be.
Speaking of food, come check out our next meeting “Pizza and Ethics” on Oct. 2nd at 6 p.m. We’ll be in the same place we always are: Room 106 in the Journalism Building.
Ethics is obviously a key issue and our field, so this should be a thought-provoking and engaging discussion.
Kevin Z. Smith will be there. He runs OSU’s renowned Kiplinger Program and recently won SPJ’s highest award so that’s pretty awesome.
And in case you didn’t figure it out by the title, there will be pizza too… so… yeah… just come!
In case you missed it, our first meeting of the year was last Thursday. We had a nice turnout and it was cool to facilitate people finding an outlet with the different student media. We hope all of you who came to get involved were able to get well-connected with the representatives from the different media.
Also, thanks to The Lantern, Scarlet and Gray Radio, Scarlette Magazine, Ohio Union TV, and Lantern TV for coming.
It was a non-traditional meeting for SPJ, and if you are wondering what WE will do for the rest of the year, you’re in luck.
We have a lot of exciting things planned. Our next meeting will be next Thursday (Sept. 18th).
We’re going to have a panel discussion with journalists from different media. Garth Bishop, the editor of City Scene, will be there. Holly Zachariah, who writes for The Columbus Dispatch, is also coming. Don’t be surprised if we get a broadcast person to come as well.
This is one heck of an opportunity to get first-hand advice from people who have made it in the business. Want to know how to talk to PR folks? What’s the best way to keep your resume strong? If you have any questions like these, this is the place to be.
6 p.m. in room 106 in the Journalism Building. See you then!
We hope everyone is having a good first week of classes, and that first-years are especially taking advantage of all the great things on campus.
We want to thank you all for coming to see us at the involvement fair. It was great to see a lot of new faces and share with everyone the exciting things SPJ has to offer this year.
In case you missed us, here are a few things coming up that we are excited about.
Next week, on Thursday Sept. 4th, we’ll have our first meeting in room 106 in the Journalism Building at 6 p.m. (It’s the big class conference room on the first floor).
This meeting will be a media mixer, and a fantastic opportunity for leaders for student media to meet each other and get new people involved. The Lantern, Scarlette Magazine, Scarlet and Gray Sports Radio, Lantern TV, and AROUSE OSU student radio are all set to participate.
If you are interested in getting involved, it’s super easy and this is the best place to do it. Leadership from all organizations will be happy to help.
Our second meeting will be held two weeks from that time on Sept. 18th. We will have a panel discussion with journalists from different media, including Columbus Dispatch reporter Holly Zachariah.
We’ll hope to see you at both meetings, and stay tuned for all the other great events coming up this year!
If you’ve thought about holding an officer position on the executive board of SPJ Ohio State, come out to our election meeting! We will be voting on next year’s board and having pizza to celebrate a great year.
6pm | Journalism 106 | Thursday, Apr. 17
